Ecotricity's Green Gas

Whoop whoop! Ecotricity are about to launch their Green Gas supply so no longer will we - gas users who have no choice about whether or not to utilise this form of energy - be forced to support planet poaching companies with our monthly direct debits - hurrah!
Yes, yes, we know that present UK gas supply is by no means green but here's where the Ecotricity formulae of using revenue from energy that is damaging but necessary (for now) to invest in making sure alternative energy sources are available and offered to all as soon as is possible.

In this case, the alternative is anaerobic digestion of our ever problematic organic matter currently being dumped into land-fill sites all over the country at a rate of 18m tonnes every year. And that's just the food waste!

Transformation of this organic matter into green gas is the initial aim with other new and emerging sustainable technologies to follow. All of this needs investment of course, thus Ecotricity's Green Gas initiative will direct user tariffs to fund these green solutions thereby helping to solve both a local energy and waste problem.

As you can see, the proposed logo is quite ingenious and has rather amusingly raised some disgruntledness from British Gas. Ha!

The response from Ecotricity customers and non customers, to this idea, has been fantastic. The response from British Gas has been something else. Odd to say the least.

Just before Xmas we had a series of legal threats from them, about one a week for three weeks in fact. The first alleged that we were ‘pretending’ to be British Gas. They didn’t like our tongue in cheek “Real British Gas” logo it seems – we’ve tweaked it a bit here to make them feel better. It’s hard to take that seriously – we are so not pretending to be British Gas. Why on earth would we? It was a joke guys.

About a week later we got another legal threat, this time dear old BG claimed we were misleading people by offering Green Gas, when in fact it wasn’t (green). Something we think we’ve been pretty clear about..."
